Harken Thinks Ice

2023 DN Worlds Home Page
DN North America and the Western Region are thrilled to announce that Harken is the official media sponsor of the 50th Anniversary of the DN World Championship, January 21 – 28, 2023. Members of the Harken marketing communications team, including Hannah Noll, will join us on the ice to produce daily video reports and social media content. We anticipate about 100 DN sailors from around the world will compete in this event.

The Western Region (MN, WI, IL, IN), the host of the 2023 DN Worlds, is Harken Country. Pewaukee, Wisconsin, is the headquarters of the world’s most famous marine supply company. Harken’s tradition of their commitment to the ice sailing culture began with founders Peter and Olaf Harken, who sailed Skeeters and Nites. From DNs to Skeeters to the giant Stern-Steerers, many employees at Harken have iceboats and are devoted to the sport.

Harken Tribal Elder Will Perrigo summed up their passion for ice sailing in the At The Front Newsletter, “Some of the most famous sailors in the world will tell you they’d quit sailing everything else before they’d stop ice boating. I agree.”

EARLY HISTORY OF THE IDNIYRA

On February 21 and 22, 1953 the Detroit Ice Yacht Club sponsored a
regatta to bring the DN skippers together to help form an association. A
meeting of the skippers was held at this regatta and two representatives
from each club present were chosen to outline a constitution for the association.
North Star Sail Club was represented by John Liston and Fred
Kagel; Anchor Bay Ice Yacht Club by Tom King and A. J. Walker; Detroit Ice
Yacht Club by William Sarns and Clifford Cartwright. The representatives
met at the home of the Cartwrights the following Sunday afternoon and
briefly outlined a constitution. William Sarns was elected to serve as temporary
secretary and to compose the constitution. The secretary prepared
a constitution and sent out copies to the representatives in the following
fall. They were returned to the secretary along with desired changes. The
changes that the majority wanted were incorporated and 200 copies were
printed. A copy was sent out to each individual who attended the first
regatta and others who were interested. On January 17, 1954 the Northwestern
Ice Yachting Association passed a resolution that they would accept
the DN Association’s specifications for their DN races which are now
included in their annual regatta.

On January 7, 1954 the North Star Sail Club offered to be host for the annual
regatta. There were no other offers so theirs was accepted. Sixty-two
programs were sent out on February 1 for the regatta scheduled for February
20 and 21. On February 19 the regatta was transferred to Cass Lake
because of poor ice at the North Star Club House on Lake St. Clair. The
first five DN’s in this regatta were: (1) Jack Moran, (2) Skip Boston, (3) Paul
Eggert, (4) Bill Sporer, and (5) Bill Sarns.

Great Western Challenge Recap: Pictures Say It All

The ice was exceptional, and it just doesn’t get any better than what we had at Lake Minnewaska in Minnesota. There was plenty of it, no real hazards, hard and smooth. The welcome we received from the people of Starbuck and Glenwood was well worth the trip alone. Thanks to the Minnesota ice sailors whose efforts and determination found this incredible playground for the Great Western Challenge.

Minnesota DNs Tuning Up For the Challenge

When Minnesota lakes start to freeze, lots of equipment comes out of hiding. US321 took advantage of Tim Oelschlager’s US5050 heated underground garage to mount hardware to a new plank. Hopefully, the epoxy will kick in time to scout ice for the first event of the DN calendar, the DN Western Challenge (Dec 2-4, 2022). The DN Western Challenge is an annual informal fun regatta on the best sailable ice in Minnesota. Keep your eye on the Minnesota Ice Sailing website.

DN Photo in Mirabaud Photography Competition

Photo: Gwidon Libera The 2022 Polish DN Championship in Lithuania.

The ‘Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image’ is a yearly photographic contest and exhibition. It seeks to recognise the very best yacht racing image taken during the year, that best represents the essence and excitement of yacht racing as a sport.

Polish photographer Gwidon Libera’s DN photos have been featured many times on this website, the DN newsletter Runner Tracks, and the Yearbook. 2022 IDNIYRA World Champion Robert Graczyk P31 chose Gwidon’s photo for the cover of the 2023 IDNIYRA Yearbook. Gwidon’s photo, a dramatic capture of a mast failure from the 2021 Polish Championship, was an entry for the 2022 Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image of the year.

Though not the winning shot, it’s the number one photo among the DN community. Our photographers help tell the story of this sport. Thank you, Gwidon and all other photographers, for sharing your work with us over the years.

THE DN ICE YACHT

The DN is most popular iceboat in the world. Whether you are a racer or cruiser, your $25 membership in the IDNIYRA helps to promote the art and skill of DN ice yacht construction and the sport of ice yachting on all the hard waters of the world.
